However, they both are having distinct differentiation and purposes.\n<h2 id=\"What_is_a_Router.3F\" class=\"dfnanchor\">What is a Router?<\/h2>\nA router is a networking device that <em><strong>connects computer networks<\/strong><\/em>, for example, connecting a home network with the Internet. Routers are the workhorses that transfer packets of data between networks to establish and sustain communication between two nodes in an\u00a0internetwork.\n\nRouters operate at Layer 3 (network layer) of the OSI model.\n\nA router uses the destination IP address in a data packet to determine where to forward the packet.\n\n\u00a0\n<h2 id=\"What_is_a_Network_Switch.3F\" class=\"dfnanchor\">What is a Network Switch?<\/h2>\nA network switch <em><strong>connects devices together on a single computer network<\/strong><\/em>.\n\nA switch is also called switching hub, bridging hub, or MAC bridge.
